Athletics workshop with Ashleigh Nelson
4th January 2018
On Wednesday 6th December, Park View welcomed Olympic Athlete - Ashleigh Nelson through the charity Inspired Through Sport. Ashleigh is an English sprinter who specialises in the 100 metres and was selected to represent Great Britain at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. At the 2014 European Championships, she won a gold medal in the 4 × 100m relay and a bronze medal in the 100 metres. She also won a bronze medal in the 4 × 100m relay at the 2013 World Championships.
During her time at Park View, she led the Year 8 boys and girls in an athletic session. This included showing students the skills they need to be a runner and the dedication required to become and stay performing at the top elite level of athletics. The day included a Q&A session where she answered numerous questions from the students about her life as an athlete.
After inspiring the Year 8s in athletics, Ashleigh then talked to the Year 10 PE GCSE students about her story of becoming an athlete and going to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The students were very impressed with her story of meeting the likes of Usain Bolt and Michael Jordan. She also explained how her countless injuries have not held her back in competing and the drive to carry on.
Before Ashleigh came to the school, the Year 8s organised fundraising events to raise money for the charity Inspired Through Sport. As a result, students raised an amazing £243.43.
We wish Ashleigh the best of luck in her upcoming events and hope to carry on this link with Inspired Though Sport so the next generation of pupils can be inspired to take on sport both for fun and at a competitive level.
