Headteacher's welcome message

Rob ThomasI would like to introduce myself to you; my name is Rob Thomas and I’ll be joining Park View School as its Interim Headteacher from January 2014.  I thought it would be helpful to tell you a little about myself.  I am an experienced Headteacher (I’ve been a head for 12 years).  I was a substantive head in a school called Thomas Tallis in Greenwich for 9 years.  I now split my time between interim headships and in helping to set up the iPad Academy (this is a company which supports schools in making the best use of new technologies).

I love being a Headteacher; after leaving my permanent headship, I had a brief spell as a consultant and found I really missed the thrill that being a head brings.  In my opinion, it is the best job in the world; you have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of young people.

I was attracted to Park View because it is clearly a school on a journey and is well on the way to becoming outstanding.  Having visited the school, and been shown around by Alex Atherton, my initial impressions were reinforced; I fell in love with the purposeful, positive atmosphere focused on learning.  I consider myself fortunate to have been appointed as the interim Headteacher.

I know that you will be anxious now that Alex Atherton has departed; he and the staff have had a major impact in moving the school forward.  However, I can offer you some reassurance; I will build on the strong foundations and continue to develop Park View as a centre of learning excellence.

In the short term, my most important job is to build relationships with everyone in the community and to start to earn their trust and respect.  I have met with all students in assemblies and introduced myself explaining that I have very high expectations of myself and all around me; I also always treat people with respect and expect the same in return.

As mentioned earlier, people become anxious at times of change and Alex’s departure is a major milestone in the school’s history.  I have led a successful school for many years and this is my third interim headship.  I will lead the school with empathy and care but I will also provide the challenge and stimulus to lead it forward. I have much experience in placing learning and the students at the heart of the school and hope to bring some fresh ideas which will enable Park View to continue on its journey to outstanding, while it searches for a new permanent Headteacher.

I am very accessible and place high value on strong parental links; together we are stronger.

I look forward to meeting you all over time.

Yours faithfully

Rob Thomas
