The London School of Economics

London School of EconomicsPark View School has just finished its 4th consecutive year of the London School of Economics tutoring programme. The ten week  LSE tutoring programme consists of undergraduates at LSE coming in and working, mentoring and tutoring  with students from Park View in specific subjects after school. This year ten percent of Year 9 students were tutored in high level Mathematics and activities to promote problem solving skills. The Mathematics and skills students were being tutored in will be needed for future Maths GCSE papers.

Year 9 Deputy and LSE co-ordinator Mr Ernest said. It has been another great year working with the LSE and its tutors who were fantastic. The students did find the level of work more testing than previous years, however with the help from the LSE tutors they all managed to find their way in the end. This level of work will help the students with their GCSE’s in the future,  also the  knowledge they have gained during the programme will also be used and shared in the classroom, peer mentoring and future study groups.

For next year’s programme Park View students will continue with more high level Mathematics as well as GCSE options in Science, Physics, languages, and business.

Into UniversityIntoUniversity

The Careers department at Park View works throughout the academic year in partnership with a charity based organisation called IntoUniversity, whose programme of support provides children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds the help they need to achieve their potential.

Park View works with up to thirty students from each Year group on a series of workshops as part of the FOCUS programme.

The school curriculum doesn’t always make links with the university experience of concentrated, passionate learning in a specialist area. The FOCUS programme offers young people learning experiences which aim to immerse them in a single topic or subject area. It includes confidence building, extending horizons, teamwork skills, leadership, pathways to the future, raising aspirations, making right choices and normalising the aspiration of going to university.

By embedding career education within these workshops and delivery of aspiration events, the Careers department and IntoUniversity’s aims are that the work carried out reflect the following values; talent, quality, compassion, aspiration and teamwork.
