- Curriculum Overview
Our Mathematics department strives to mould young people into able problem solvers, logical thinkers and lifelong mathematicians as a product of inspirational and reflective teaching.
We believe that:-
- Mathematics is about creativity, connections, making sense and communicating
- Students’ questions are really important
- Everyone can learn mathematics to the highest levels
- Learning is more important than performing
- Depth of understanding is more important than speed of answering
We promote equality and diversity by providing a parallel learning environment for all students.
In Years 7, 8 & 9 pupils are taught in Mixed Attainment classes. In Years 10 and 11 pupils are taught in either Higher or Foundation classes.
We teach our pupils in Mixed Attainment classes because we believe that these classes are a demonstration of social justice and enable children to learn without limits. We also believe that labelling children and setting them according to some notion of their fixed ‘ability’ places limits on their learning.
At the start of every unit of work pupils are given a Progress Map which describes the different mathematical skills that are covered within the unit. Pupils then complete a pre-teaching assessment task to identify which of the skills they have already consolidated. In every lesson, students have access to a range of different tasks at different levels of difficulty, this ensures that all students are given the opportunity to build upon their existing knowledge. Students refer to their Progress Map each lesson to inform their choice of task and also to reflect on the new knowledge they have gained. Pupils are re-assessed at the end of the unit of work to monitor and track their progress. By using Progress Maps in this way teachers and students are aware of what the students know and understand and what it is that they need to do next to improve.
